    De Soto, KS
De Soto was founded in 1857 and named after the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. It was initially a trading post and a stop along the Santa Fe Trail. During the Civil War, it was occupied by both Confederate and Union forces at different times. Today, De Soto is a thriving community with a rich history that is still evident in its downtown area.
  • The year 1857 brought about the start of the City of De Soto and it got its name in honor of a Native American by that same name. Later, in the early 1940's, construction began on the 9,080 acre Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant which drew people from all over the U.S. to work there. The city's population quickly grew in 1943, and the town went from 400 residents to 1,000 residents! Today De Soto has a population of 5,687. The housing prices here are some of the most affordable in Johnson County, usually about 20% lower than the rest of the county.
