  • Slivinskis' Bakery is tucked away in the corner of the Shopping Center in Kearney. This hidden treat is well worth the search. I start gaining weight as soon as I get out of my truck and head for the door. The display rack is full of all the great things that makes my "sweet tooth" take over my brain. My mind races trying to make a choice of what will super charge my morning. There is always a smile behind the counter and the service is quick and friendly. There are a couple of tables if you prefer, but I'm a grab and go guy. The delicious smell alone keeps me going back for more. The farewell greeting is "have a good day." I already have as soon as I get my choice out of the sack and into my mouth.

  • I drive by James Farm everyday as I come to my office. This is the boyhood home of Frank and Jesse James. I often wonder if the road I'm driving on was the road that Frank and Jesse road on returning from one of their many robberies. What would the area look like between 1866 and 1876 when they were most active?

While you're there, check out the James Museum that is operated by Clay County and open year round. There is also Claybrook Park which is available by reservation. One of the James Brothers' early robberies was believed to be of the Clay County Savings Associate (still in business as Clay County Savings Bank) in Liberty, MO.

There have been over 20 movies made about Jesse James staring such actors and Roy Rogers, Tyrone Power, Henry Fonda, Clayton Moore, Audie Murphy, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash and Brad Pitt to name a few.

Come North and step back in time. It's a nice drive. North on I-35 to 92 Hwy east. Go through Kearney then North on Jesse James Farm Road. Open daily 9 to 4.

Looking for more to do? Bring a picnic lunch and visit Watkins Mill for a relaxing day at the lake.
