Lots of people are aware of Parkville's annual Christmas on the River celebration, with its 1000-voice choir, strolling carollers and fantastic fireworks display. Most people, however, don't know how Main Street Parkville Association (MSPA) pays for this wonderful, free event. Every year, there are corporate underwriters and other donors, but there is also a community fundraiser that happens one week before the main event. It is called the "Gallery of Trees." Local individuals and businesses put together fully-decorated, themed Christmas trees for a silent auction. There are always some great trees and wreaths on which to bid. This year, the event will take place at the Bank Liberty building, 12 E 1st St., downtown Parkville. Ticket prices are $50 each and include a cocktail reception, silent and live auctions, and food provided by Parkville restaurants. The event is Thursday, November 30 at 6:30 p.m.

Throughout each year, many festivals and celebrations take place in Parkville, and one of my favorites is Christmas on the River! Since moving to Riss Lake in 1993, my family and I have attended countless Christmas on the River celebrations to help kick-off the December Holiday Season, and will again in 2017! Memories include each of our children participating in the Park Hill School District’s 1000-Voice Choir, singing Christmas carols as part of Santa Claus’s arrival in Parkville (many years ago!), enjoying hot chocolate as we walked through downtown Parkville and English Landing Park, sharing holiday greetings with many neighbors and friends, and capping off the evenings with spectacular Fireworks Shows over the Missouri River!

Christmas on the River 2017 is Friday, December 1, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The link below provides details for all of the fun things to do and see, so you can plan your evening in festive downtown Parkville! Admission is free!

Parkville Nature Sanctuary is home to a large buck that only shows himself during the fall mating season. I saw him yesterday, as he ran across the trail right in front of me! I will try to get a photo of him this fall on one of my treks up the aptly-named "white tail trail." This time of year is ripe for seeing wildlife in the Sanctuary, as the foliage starts to die away. The changing colors are beautiful, too! If you happen to reside in Riss Lake, there is a Sanctuary entrance behind the Woodhaven Pool. Just park at the pool and head to the right of the playground equipment to the footpath. This leads directly onto the white tail trail.

The Parkville Farmer's Market is no longer open on Wednesday afternoons. Last Wednesday was the last market for this season. So....if you had that on your calendar, shift it to this Saturday. The farmer's market is still open each Saturday through October 28, from 7:00 a.m. to noon. You can still snag local produce, honey, baked goods, meat, eggs, dog treats, etc. at this great venue. Click through to the website and take a look at what is in season. I love to go down there on a Saturday morning and see what goodies are available. This is a perfect stop after getting some exercise in the park. Don't miss out on the remainder of the season!

My family and I moved to Parkville in 2006. One of the biggest draws for us was the historic downtown shopping and dining area on Main Street and its adjoining streets. There is nothing to compare to the quaint feel of this river town and the beautiful view to the Missouri River and the backdrop of Park University. We found locally-owned businesses that offer something different and unique, from local artists to French food. If I have a gift to buy, I check in downtown first. Downtown Parkville businesses have so much to offer. If you haven't been downtown in awhile, the Final Fridays event is a great time to get a flavor for what this dynamic town has to offer. The event is from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on every month and includes live music. Shops are open late for your enjoyment. I know I will be there!

There are so many great ways to stay active in Platte County, and Parkville, in particular. If you are like me and enjoy staying fit outdoors, this is a great place to be! Because my joints don't allow me to run like I used to, I have taken up bicycling in the last couple of years to fill that void. There are some great trails around here to accomplish this and keep you off of the roadways. If you live in Riss Lake, like I do, you can easily bike the three miles to the Line Creek Trail. Just take 64th Street east to the trail head. Once there, you can go north and bike all the way to the new Costco and back, for a round trip of about 16 miles. Or, go south on the trail and do a loop that includes the Line Creek trail, the levee near Ameristar, the riverfront trail and then a mile or so on 9 highway, up through Park University grounds and back into Riss Lake, also for 16 miles. This is a beautiful ride and a great way to see our community from a different perspective.

Parkville is full of places to explore, and the Green Hills of Platte County Wildlife Preserve is no exception. My husband and I are always looking for places where we can work out that are off the beaten path, and this location fits the bill. To find it, head east out of downtown Parkville on Highway 9. You will see a brown sign on your right in about a mile, directing you toward the wildlife preserve. It is on the north side of highway 9. The preserve has a very well-maintained trail system through the woods and a wetlands area. It is about a one-mile loop. The best part is dogs can come, too!
