Located alongside the majestic Missouri River in Parkville, Missouri, English Landing Park offers a serene escape for outdoor enthusiasts and families alike. Spanning 68 acres, this picturesque park boasts a rich history, scenic walking trails, and a range of amenities that make it a favorite destination for locals and visitors. Whether you enjoy jogging, biking, picnicking, or simply immersing yourself in nature, English Landing Park has something for everyone to enjoy.

English Landing Park was once comprised of low-water areas along the Missouri River, but today it stands as a testament to the transformation of the landscape. In 1838, Colonel George S. Park, a Texas War of Independence veteran, purchased the land from the English Brothers. He acquired a riverboat landing along with the parkland, later becoming a notorious port of call for the slave trade during the Civil War. Despite the city of Parkville not being a Civil War battlefield, the area witnessed tragic events as enslaved individuals sought freedom by crossing the river into Kansas. Unmarked cemeteries in the present-day Misty Woods subdivision serve as a solemn reminder of this dark chapter in history.

Recreation and amenities: One of the highlights of English Landing Park is its three-mile jogging and biking trail that winds along the edge of the Missouri River. As you navigate this scenic pathway, you'll be captivated by the stunning natural beauty surrounding you, including ages-old weeping willow trees and cottonwoods of incredible height. There are numerous 5K and 10K races throughout the year on its flat, crushed gravel paths. The park also features multiple shelters for picnics, a soccer field, a baseball diamond, and two playgrounds designed for small and bigger kids. For those seeking a unique and active experience, the park offers a recently added nine-hole disc golf course that meanders around the jogging/biking trail.

The park's crown jewel is the historic Waddell "A" Truss Bridge, which was built in 1898 and is the subject of a patent. This iconic bridge spans the enchanting Linn Branch Creek and serves as a reminder of the area's rich architectural heritage. Moreover, English Landing Park offers a boat ramp, sand volleyball court, and a large playground area, ensuring no shortage of recreational options. The newest addition to the park is an off-leash dog park, free and open to the public, on the park's West end. Explore downtown Parkville nearby, with tons of shopping and dining experiences, after a stroll through the park.

Events and Rental Opportunities: English Landing Park provides a charming setting for special events and family gatherings. With three shelters, two stages, three practice baseball fields, one soccer practice field, and three sand volleyball courts available for rent, the park offers a range of rental options to accommodate your needs. To learn more about reservations and availability, click on the Park Reservations quick links provided on the park's website (linked below).

English Landing Park welcomes visitors daily from 5:30 a.m. until midnight, providing ample opportunity to explore its natural wonders and engage in recreational activities. Whether you're an avid cyclist or runner, a leisurely walker, or a nature enthusiast, this park offers an idyllic trip into nature's beauty and an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Incahoots describes themselves as "Parkville's one-stop shop for caffeine, sweets, and booze."

Downtown Parkville is a charming shopping destination with fun for the whole family and Incahoots is no exception. I stopped in this morning for my first cup of coffee and I was pleasantly surprised by the custom roasted beans and flavor. The storefront is unique, being in an old train car, and very soon they'll be opening their bar area for evening adult beverages also! Give it a try.
  • Parkville is one of my all-time favorite places to be, especially in the summer. It is a cute city with a population of just over 5,500 people. My favorite thing to do there is playing mini-golf at Parkville Mini Golf. You can't miss it as it is located at the top of the stairs, which is the first thing you see when entering Parkville. Before COVID, they would give out free popcorn to people playing on the course. Ice cream and bottled drinks are also available to purchase.

Go back to the bottom of the stairs and you will find a cute little Italian restaurant which has amazing bread and pasta. There is also a really good pizza shop located just across the street as well as multiple boutique and coffee shops. If you love antiques as much as I do, then you are sure to enjoy this place as it also has many antique stores for you to get lost in. One of the antique stores has a little deli in it which has good subs and cream soda!

Parkville is also home to Park University which you can spot from the highway before even entering the city. This beautiful, private, non-profit school was founded in 1875 and the bell still rings. If you don't mind the historic downtown feel, you're sure to love Parkville too!

  • Right off of 4I-29, this Seafood restaurant is worth the trip, but make reservations! They have their regular menu, plus daily specials. Fresh fish, shrimp, and scallops are all freshly prepared. Even the bed is freshly prepared, and you can tell it in the fluffy tastiness.

I have heard fabulous things about this little quaint, French cafe in downtown Parkville. After looking it up, Cafe des Amis is certainly on my bucket list for a date night with my husband. It offers traditional beef bourguignon to pan-seared diced chicken breast. Once I go there, I'll let you know how it is so stay tuned! Cafe des Amis is located in Downtown Parkville at 112 Main Street. Visit the link for more information.
  • If you work downtown or over to the east of Parkville, you'll likely get to take Route 9 home, which means getting this view and very little traffic on a daily basis. Aside from being beautiful, it could inspire a walk along the river in English Landing Park -- the only significant park in Kansas City along the river. Plus! Being near "blue spaces" (water) is actually healing.

My husband and I were lucky enough to have last Friday off work and took that time to spend the early afternoon in downtown Parkville. We had a little lunch at the Craic and then headed down to Grigsby Field for the official presentation of $25,000 to the City of Parkville from Royals Charities and Price Chopper. These two groups will make it possible to get the fields up and running this spring and get the kids back in downtown. On one of our first visits to Parkville before we moved here, we visited downtown on a Saturday. That day, there was a summer league baseball game going on, and we were sold on Parkville! We are huge baseball fans, both of the Royals and our own kids. My husband has since coached both of my sons for years on the Parkville fields. We are so thrilled that they will be back in shape for spring training!

I ran on the English Landing Trail this morning for the first time in almost a year. It is so nice to have it available again for this old body. The trail was mostly in good condition, with some areas of un-level ground, so just pay attention. Thank you to the city and county for working so hard to get both downtown parks up and running again.
