Hey everyone, as some already know, my wife and I relocated to the downtown area specifically the Quality Hill area of a historic piece of downtown. We gave up the suburbs of Kansas, MO (Less's Summit), and now we're loft living in the heartbeat of the city, where we found ourselves in a totally new and different vibe which in some ways were not surprising and others very surprising. I'll get more into that on another blog or vlog, but I wanted to share some history behind Quality Hill.

It is on the west side of downtown, bounded by Broadway to the east, I-35 to the west, 7th Street to the north, and 14th Street to the south. The Kansas border is half a mile away through the West Bottoms.

Here's a fact; Quality Hill has been listed as a historic district since 1978 on the National Register of Historic Places; how cool is that to be living in this part of the city? We absolutely love it!

The area is very diverse and rich in multi cultures that makes Quality Hill very appealing to live in. Don't get me wrong, there are some hang ups such as finding parking and hoping your car doesn't get dinged by someone not experienced enough to parallel park....LOL

If these walls could talk! The Coates House Hotel sits at the corner of 10th and Broadway in downtown Kansas City, Mo. It's current use is apartment rentals. This building began construction in 1857 but had to be halted due to the Civil War breaking out. Matter of fact a huge tarp was put over the walls and the shell was used to construct and prepare war items.

In 1978 the hotel caught fire and still remains the worst hotel fire in Kansas City history. During its heyday, many presidents stayed there while in town. As a matter of fact, president Grover Cleveland watched a Kansas City parade from the second floor balcony. Walt Disney stayed here many times as his career began. He worked on a mouse idea for a cartoon in this very hotel. We all know the result - Mickey Mouse!

In the late 1980's the hotel was renovated to apartments and my oldest son was one of the first tenants in the building. There was another fire scare in 1988 when construction workers ignited a flammable near the elevator shaft but the fire department was very quick to respond.

If you find yourself in the downtown area of Kansas City, MO be sure to check out the historic building at the corner of 10th and Broadway, still known as The Coates House.
