Another one of the activities that make Riss Lake the place to live and raise your kids. The Riss Lake Triathlon is put on in part by the homes association, however, hugely by the volunteers in the community. Kids from ages 5-16 compete in age categories as well as age-appropriate distances. Yes, no swimming in the lake so the triathlon begins with pool laps. This event brings the entire community out to either volunteer or to cheer on the participants. In this event of mostly endurance and some skill, all finishers are rewarded, not for winning but for participating not only in the event but also in the community.

Although Riss Lake does not do an official fireworks display they should advertise as such. If you have the opportunity to be on the lake the evening of the fourth this agent highly recommends it! Not only do you see the Parkville fireworks from English Landing Park but you can see fireworks displays from all over Platte and Wyandotte Counties. The boats are decked out in their red, white, and blue with old glory flying. It is an amazing display of patriotism.

One thing I love about living in Riss Lake is the proximity to so many different fitness options that don't involve a gym membership, most within one-three miles. The closest and easiest is, of course, Riss Lake itself. The lake is a great place to paddle board, kayak and canoe. If you are a runner or walker, just take a walk on the well-kept sidewalks. The hills in the neighborhood will give you a great workout!

If you want to get out of the neighborhood, venture the very short distance south on Highway 9 to the Parkville Nature Sanctuary where nature's bounty surrounds the walking and hiking trails. The White Tail Trail is my favorite. Continuing south on Highway 9 will take you to English Landing Park which affords 4+ miles of walking, jogging and biking trails right along the Missouri River. A little further southwest from downtown Parkville will take you to the beautiful trails of the Green Hills of Platte Wildlife Preserve where dogs are allowed. The trail head for the Missouri Riverfront Trail is just west of this and connects to the Line Creek Trail for a fabulous 16 mile loop. I don't know too many places with these options!

I took my first Orange Theory Fitness (OTF) class yesterday at the gym located in Burlington Creek. What an excellent workout and another great addition to all the wonderful fitness options in the immediate area. The one-hour class is comprised of treadmill work (you can walk or run), weight lifting and rowing. If you love high intensity interval training, this is perfect for you! You get a huge calorie burn and full-body workout that will keep the calories burning all day long. The gym opens officially on August 17, but they are currently still offering introductory rates and free class trials. Check it out!

One of my favorite outdoor activites is stand up paddle boarding (SUP). If you are a resident of the Riss Lake subdivision, this is an activity that you can participate in right in your own neighborhood! I have been paddling on the lake for years and recently invested in an inflatable paddleboard for easier transport to and from the lake. I just drive right down to the marina, inflate my board and get out on the water. Paddling on Riss Lake is a great way to see the neighborhood from the water. There are many small coves easily accessible from a board. Wildlife is also plentiful. Just yesterday, I saw a young buck drinking from the lake. Turtles, herons, bald eagles and many varieties of fish are also in residence there. Just another outdoor activity that this great neighborhood has to offer.
