Langston Hughes Elementary is a highly ranked elementary school located in West Lawrence. It sits on 50 acres of land that was purchased in 1986 by the Lawrence Board of Education. The school, located at 1101 George Williams Way, opened in 2000 and is across from DeVictor Park.

DeVictor Park was designed to help conserve existing open space because West Lawrence has become a quickly developing area. Recreational trails were placed in the park so residents from nearby neighborhoods can have ready access to the park. DeVictor Park also offers a wide variety of wildlife, native grasses and trees. Visitors to the park can easily find a solitude and seclusion from daily activities. The park also has an outdoor classroom designed by the Kansas chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students from the University of Kansas. Students from Langston Hughes Elementary frequently use this resource.

Many of the homes in this district are new construction or were built within the last 15 years. Most of the neighborhoods are very nice and quiet. Many include maintenance free living.
