West Lawrence Area Insight

  • West Lawrence
West Lawrence is generally considered to be what lies west of Iowa Street. While the main campus of the University of Kansas makes up the heart of the city and lies nearer to Downtown, West Campus (a largely research-focused arm of the University) takes up a decent chunk of the western part of the city. From there it's mostly suburban-style neighborhoods, large apartment complexes, shopping areas, and large divided parkways that contribute to the character of West Lawrence, contrasting it with the more urban flavor of Downtown.

West Lawrence is the newer half of town, being largely constructed since the 1970's while Lawrence itself can trace its history clear back to the 1860's and the Civil War. The scars from that time are largely absent here, but they're never far away from the hearts of the Lawrencians who call this area home. The city's most affluent neighborhoods are located here, and much of the towns residential development are moving in a westerly direction, expanding the size of the town.

The Alvamar Golf Course and Country Club is located here, and is known for its exceptional course and the large, beautiful homes that line its greens. Highway K-10 wraps around the western edge of town and will soon make travel from here to Kansas City much easier for commuters. West Lawrence is an ideal destination for families who want to live in Lawrence and enjoy all the city has to offer, but still have a space of their very own to carve out. No part of town is too far from Downtown or the University to enjoy at a moment's notice, and West Lawrence offers the quiet peacefulness that many people expect from a town in Kansas.
