This is a huge equine event that has multiple activities, taking place in different locations across the grounds. Literally, there is something for everyone! From cowboy poetry and art, to the vendors with tons of shopping opportunities, to the different clinicians and demos. This is not specific to a riding discipline, nor equine breed specific. If you own horses, enjoy horses or even like to view them from afar, this is an event you will want to attend! It's on about 76 acres of oak-hickory forest with steep slopes and good views, adjacent to MacLennan Park and Cedar Crest (the Kansas Governor's residence). The park offers hiking, walking, running and mountain biking trails, and the river is accessible to canoes, kayaks and other small watercraft. • Topeka was nicknamed the Golden City by early settlers to the area, taken by the beauty of the sunlit rolling hills and autumn elms. The city crest was designed in the 1960's by city-county planning department artist, Ed Bruske, at the request of Commander L.R. Olsen, for his USS Topeka guided missile cruiser. This ship was the second of three USS Topeka's named for our city. The third USS Topeka was commissioned in 1989 as a nuclear attack submarine, and is still on active service. The Topeka flag was adopted in 1977; it was a United States bicentennial project of Boy Scout Troop 43 and designed by Dana Villeme, a 13-year old Eagle Scout, with the advice of some local architects.

Huff 'n Puff has been a Topeka tradition since 1975 and is held at Lake Shawnee. Currently, this event hosts approximately 30 hot air balloons each September and is a three day weekend event. The balloons try to fly Friday and Saturday, both morning and evening. On these nights they also do a glow at dusk. Then the balloons fly again on Sunday morning.

The event has a county fair touch to it. There are many food and beverage vendors, music and just a great time. Do make sure to arrive early, as on a Saturday night my wife and I were in the RE/MAX balloon and we could see how long the line was to get to the event! Also, Lake Shawnee is not only a great place for Huff 'n Puff, but also water sports, baseball, and more including places for weddings.
