  • Every year, for about 30 years, around Halloween, the Sedalia Noonday Optimist Club holds their annual Haunted Hayride at the Missouri State Fairgrounds. Many people think of this as a family tradition with new spectators checking it out every year. On a normal year, the Optimist Club sees about 800 -1,000 people come through the lines.

There are normally five trucks or trailers loaded with hay bales that slowly drive along a one and a half mile trail through the Fairgrounds starting at dark. Haunters of all ages come early in the afternoon to start decorating and getting their costumes and face painting ready for the public. Each 'station' of haunters has a theme ranging from Bone Collectors, Zombie Apocalypse, an accident scene, chainsaws, Children of the Corn and dead people crawling around a cemetery. Included in the ticket for the hayride is also dinner consisting of hot dogs, chips and pop. The Sedalia Noonday Optimist Club Haunted Hayride is one of the many fun things to do on the Missouri State Fairgrounds!

Coming soon! Many are wondering what is going on with the excavation of the north east corner on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. Here's the scoop!
An exciting new project is in the works at The Missouri State Fairgrounds! A cattle drive in 1866 brought Texas ranchers to Sedalia in a combined effort to drive their cattle to the nearest point that the railroad tracks reached. These cattle were being shipped to Chicago. Sedalia was the place their trail ended from Texas before being loaded onto the train for shipment. Sedalia was one of the earliest cow towns and was referred to as "The Sedalia Trail" in the popular television series "Rawhide". Sedalia will become a tourist destination as this project takes life. Train cars and life size sculptures of long horned cattle, and the cowboys and horses that drove them, will welcome locals and tourists alike!

Sedalia's historic Katy Depot is located at 600 East Third Street. The MO-KS-TX Railroad began operating in Sedalia in 1873. The Katy Depot was built with limestone from a local quarry and finally opened in May of 1896. The Depot was used by the community for more than 60 years and the last train to leave the depot was in 1958. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources took over in 1987 and the Depot is still part of the Katy Trail State Park. The tracks were removed and converted into a walking and biking trail traveling across Sedalia and beyond utilized by locals and tourists alike.

The Depot has been restored inside and out and is home to the Sedalia Welcome Center and Chamber of Commerce. Inside you will find exhibits that represent the influence the railroad has had on the Sedalia community. You'll be taken back to the past when you walk through the door and see the displays and hear the stories of how the Katy Depot came to be and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. You can take a piece of history with you in the unique gift shop that greets visitors to the Depot and offers souvenirs for sale. Take time to view the sculptures outside the Depot that are symbols of Sedalia's past, along with old pianos placed outside reminding us of the ragtime heritage Sedalia is also known for. Come visit our Katy Depot and enjoy the nostalgia of a time long past but not forgotten!
