Restore Emporium on The Country Club Plaza may very well be my new favorite store in Kansas City! It is a unique family owned business that allows different vendors to come in and sell their products. Each vendor appears to be assigned designated areas in the store to sell their merchandise. What I love about this store is that most of the items are either vintage or vintage inspired, antique, farmhouse (think HGTV Magnolia), or trendy urban decor that are displayed by visiting lots of individual vendors all in one location. There is a little of everything for decorating your home with today’s sought after trends including hand crafted and repurposed items. Think farmhouse, rustic, industrial, modern urban, and antiques all combined in one location to go together beautifully. Lots of cool stuff that is one of a kind!

The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures, which was previously known as the Toy and Miniature Museum of Kansas City, is located at 52nd and Oak just outside The Country Club Plaza. The museum recently went through an extensive eight million dollar renovation and is known for having one of the largest collections of antique toys in the nation. The Toys and Miniature Museum also contains one of the biggest collections of fine-scale contemporary miniatures in the world. Visiting this museum will bring back childhood memories (if you're as old as me) of some of your favorite toys. It is called a miniature museum for a reason. Some of the toys are so small that they can be hard to see. You are sure to enjoy the miniature doll houses and be amazed with all the detail and workmanship that was put into creating these beautiful masterpieces.

It’s probably no surprise to Kansas City locals that the JC Nichols Memorial Fountain is the most photographed fountain in all of Kansas City. The fountain consist of four horsemen. Each one of the horsemen is said to represent one of the great mighty four rivers of the world consisting of the Mississippi River, Volga River, Rhine River, and Seine River. The fountain was originally sculptured in New York in 1910. However, it was unfortunately vandalized on numerous occasions and was missing almost a dozen parts. The Nichols family purchased the fountain in 1951 and had it refurbished. The fountain was installed at its current location on The Country Club Plaza in 1960. On any given day you can see tourists, prom groups, wedding parties, and more get their pictures taken in front of this beautiful monument.

  • As I was running through Jacob L. Loose Park a couple of weeks ago, I was surprised and delighted to see electric car charging station on the north side of the park. Upon further investigation, I discovered that the charging stations are part of the more than 1,000 car charging stations throughout the metropolitan area, on both sides of the state line and are part of the “KCP&L Clean Charge Network.” According to KCP&L’s website there are more charging stations installed here than any US city. See the KCP&L website for additional information and a map of the charging stations.
  • The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival’s run of "Twelfth Night" began this week and will run through July 3, 2016. The Festival is now in its 24th season! It was founded by Marilyn Strauss at the urging of Joseph Papp, founder of the New York City Shakespeare Festival.

The Kansas City Festival is located in Southmoreland Park and admission is free for attendees. The festival opens at 6:00 p.m. and the play starts at 8:00 p.m. Prior to the start of the play there is a talk about the play, parody performances, and other events. This is a time when many guests have a picnic with food and drink they have brought with them or purchased at the festival. Seating is on blankets and chairs brought by attendees, or on chairs that can be rented at the festival. For more information, see the festival’s web site at KCShakes.org.

The comedy, "Twelfth Night," is my favorite Shakespeare play and I am hopeful to attend the festival at least three times during its run. The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival is one of the many things that makes Kansas City a great community in which to live! Come and enjoy.
