Like many cities in the Kansas City metro are, Independence is rich in historical significance. Independence was founded on March 29, 1827, and quickly became a vital frontier town. Known as the "Queen City of the Trails," Independence was an important stop on the California, Oregon and Santa Fe Trails. Independence is also the hometown of President Harry S. Truman and where he began his political career.

There are several historical landmarks in Independence, including the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, and the National Frontier Trails Center. There are also many modern day amenities and attractions including the Adventure Oasis Water Park, the new Independence Event Center, nearby Arrowhead Stadium, and over 21,000 acres of outdoor fun made possible by Jackson County Parks and Recreation. Kansas City has great sports teams (Royals/Chiefs) but a team that flies under the radar is the Kansas City Mavericks. Ice hockey is not the number one sport in America, but it sure is entertaining to watch, and right here in the KCMO we get to be able to have a team. The Mavericks are a professional ice hockey team that is affiliated with the NHL team the Calgary Flames. Although the Mavericks are not in the NHL, they are still a professional team associated with the ECHL. Their home games are played at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence and are currently hosting games this season. This season will be their 12th season representing the Kansas City Metro. So if you are a fan of hockey, or maybe you have never been to a game and want to just see if you would enjoy it, I'd grab tickets and go out and support.

Bingham-Waggoner Estate is located on the great Santa Fe Trail. The estate got its name from two past owners. One was the local politician and Civil War artist, George Caleb Bingham. The estate was later moved into by a family owning a nearby flour mill, the Waggoner family. In 1979 the City of Independence began its journey to preserve the 19.5-acre estate, and convert it into both a museum and park. Not only is the property historically beautiful, but interestingly enough if you look closely you can still see the deep tracks left by wagons that once passed by the property.
Bingham-Waggoner Estate hosts not only regular tours, but holiday based tours, wedding, and other public events.

The Vaile Mansion, built in 1881 by Harvey and Sophia Vaile was donated to the City of Independence in 1983. With 31 rooms, nine marble fireplaces, and a 48,000-gallon wine cellar, the home definitely holds valuable historic beauty. The detail in the painted ceiling and the historic décor gives this marvelous mansion its own unique character that you have to experience for yourself. It's also great to hear about the history of the family who once lived here, and what took place in the home afterward. Annual events are hosted year-round at the Vaile Mansion, such as the Strawberry Festival and the Christmas Tour. Definitely, something to look forward to!
