There are so many reasons to make Kearney, MO your home. When my family and I moved here 10 years ago, there were several things we considered when looking for a place to live. Were the schools good, how big was the community, were there things to do, did it have outdoor activities, was it close to major roadways, was it close to the airport, etc? Kearney had checked off all of our boxes. The school system is one of the best in the state. The community is not huge by any means, but it isn't small either. The town itself offers walking/biking trails, a skate park, an amphitheater that hosts outdoor concerts throughout the summer, a nearby state park, and the birthplace of Jesse James! Kearney is located right off of I-35, and a hop, skip, and jump away from I-29, making work commutes or play activities a breeze. It is also 30 minutes from an International Airport, making travel plans an easy commute also.

The old firehouse, now the Firehouse Community Center, has been a resource for Kearney seniors and youth for the last few years. Senior Citizens have come to the Firehouse for all sorts of tech support. Many have learned how to use social media and how to purchase items online. Others have gathered for camaraderie by playing cards with others, working on genealogy, or even get their group exercise on.

With the help of the community, the Kearney Enrichment Council was able to purchase a small passenger bus that can be used to transport seniors to social outings, doctor appointments, and general outings. The bus can also be used to transport youth involved in the Spark program from schools to the Firehouse and not have to pay for bus transportation. The bus is a great enhancement to services for seniors.

It's that time of the year, when you are on the walking trail in Jesse James Park, that you will see the trees decorated like Christmas trees. The City of Kearney has provided the trees and the electricity for businesses and patrons to decorate and make it their own. As you are walking you will see signs indicating the business that decorated the tree. The trees will be decorated until January 1st.

In this current pandemic era, there are many reasons to live in the Kearney area! One of them being the multiple car parades that have blessed our town. The people sat in lawn chairs, or if it was a little cool, they sat in their vehicles across the many subdivisions on the parade route. The car group volunteers waved from their cars, while the families waved back. It is energizing and makes many feel very thankful. The Kearney High School will also have a parade for the Graduating Class of 2020. I imagine there will be many more parades in our future in this new world!!

  • I began seeing Dr. Sami at Adjusted For Life Family Chiropractic in the middle of 2018. I had been living with severe hip pain for six years. In that time, I was seeing an orthopedist, and I had begun to have cortisone shots to numb the pain. When the pain would still not subside, I decided I needed to try a chiropractor. Dr. Sami was surprised to hear me tell her that if she wasn't good, I would not be returning to see her. She was up for the challenge of showing me she could help me, and that I would love seeing her. I felt relief after the first visit. My range of motion increased in my hips, and I could sleep at night again.

Unfortunately, the hips caused other problems with my muscles and back, but Dr. Sami has helped me to recover from it all. I just get her for maintenance care, and what I will call stupid care. Not that she would ever accidentally break my foot or anything. Dr. Sami has a very caring heart, warm smile, and she really listens to her clients.

Kearney has come a long way in the last 10 or so years to becoming a walker friendly city. Currently, there are over eight and a half miles of walking trails that people can enjoy, and just recently the city connected two of their park trails together with a beautiful bridge over a scenic creek bed.

Jesse James Park & Mack Porter Park both had nice trails to walk individually, but unless you wanted to hike through a field there was no connecting of the two. The city has now connected the two parks with a bridge using one of the old historical rail road buttresses. They had hoped to use both, but one was not structurally sound enough, so they used what they could.

On the bridge even during the winter, you can enjoy a scenic view of the creek with all the trees. If it is quiet enough you can use your imagination and close your eyes and almost hear the old steam train go up the tracks that you can see the old bed for. Don't wait until spring or summer to take a nice walk and enjoy the scenery, take a drive to Kearney and just north of town to the park. You won't be disappointed.

It’s hard to believe I’ve lived in the Kearney community for 20 years now. My wife's family moved here when she was in middle school. The Kearney/Holt area has been a great place for putting down roots, raising our family and building our business. Kearney is located 20 minutes north of Kansas City with an excellent school system, many parks with connecting walking trails and two golf courses with a club house at the entrance of the Villas of MariMack and Estates of MariMack. During the summer, you can take advantage of the Amphitheater with regular live music and other events!

However, since it’s winter with snow on the ground, we like to swing into Cellar & Loft, a local wine and spirits restaurant where you can have great drink and delicious food. Another new business in town is the Kearney Culinary Academy. Last week, my wife had a girls evening out, prepping freezer meals and learning a few new tips in the kitchen.
