Liberty is a city located in Clay County, Missouri and is also considered a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri. Its close proximity to KCMO means that the residents of Liberty can enjoy a local home-town feel, while also having access to the cultural and recreational advantages of a big city. William Jewell College, founded in 1849, is a nationally recognized undergraduate liberal arts college and also hosts a myriad of cultural events such as music, performing arts, and theater. The Liberty Square offers an interesting assortment of retail shops including antique and gift stores. If this doesn’t suit your taste, simply hop on one of the major highway systems for quick access to Zona Rosa or The Legends outdoor malls.

Liberty was founded in 1822, 18 years after Lewis and Clark passed through what we now call Clay County. Liberty is the home to seven historic districts and over 240 preserved homes and buildings including the historic Liberty Jail Site, the Clay County Museum, and the Jesse James Bank Museum.

    Walk With Ease
    Want to increase your balance, reduce pain and improve your mental health? Liberty Parks and Rec is sponsoring a Walk With Ease (WWE) program that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified as arthritis-appropriate. Come learn techniques to build up and maintain a successful walking program. You will meet two times a week for an hour. Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 30 - June 6 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. There will be a lesson followed by a group walk that will increase each week. The deadline to register is April 26th, online or at the Liberty Community Center.

    The eclipse is coming, the eclipse is coming! Monday, April 8th the Kansas City area will experience a 89% totality at 1:55 p.m. as the moon passes in front of the sun. What better place to watch than at the Capital Federal Sports Complex just off 291? There will be plenty of parking and wide open skies for optimal viewing. Some Liberty stores are even selling Eclipse T-shirts. Be sure and bring your eclipse viewing glasses! The next total eclipse won't happen until 8-24-2044. Better not miss this one!

    Come out and enjoy the fun of the Big Bunny Trail Hunt which runs through Easter Sunday. The Bunny Trail Hunt is a fun and interactive family activity along a section of the trail at Westboro Canterbury Park. The bunnies are hidden along the Westboro Canterbury trail and its up to you to find them. Be sure and stop by the Liberty Community Center to get your activity sheet or print them off online at the libertymissouri.gov website. This is a self guided activity and the first 500 people to turn their activity sheet into the Community Center will receive a special prize.     St. Stephen will host a Community Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 30, 2024 from 9:00- 11:30 a.m. Age range is Infant through second grade.     Did you know that Liberty Parks and Rec offers group swim lessons even in the winter? Learning to swim is a life skill that all ages should develop. Lessons are available either on Monday and Wednesdays, Tuesday and Thursdays or on Saturdays. 6 month to 2 1/2 years start out in Aqua Tot then advance to Parent & Tot until age 5. Novice, advanced Novice, Intermediate and Developmental Stroke, (which is skill based) apply to all ages after that. This is a safe and fun environment to develop swimming competency, confidence and endurance.

    Get in the Christmas spirit on December 2nd on the Historic Liberty Square when the Hometown Holiday festivities begin. From 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., there will be free family activities such as:

    The final tour of the 2023 Historic Waling Tour Series will be led by Cecelia Robinson, Historian with the Clay County African American Legacy. Cecelia will give a guided walking tour of the African American Memorial at Fairview Cemetery and Garrison School.

    Opening this weekend, September 15th, the Liberty Corn Maze is ready for some more outdoor fall fun.     The City of Liberty will test a new app-based rideshare service provided by the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, RideCo, and zTrip. Rides within the Liberty city limits are $3.00. Rides to the airport are $10.00.

    This pilot program will run from September 1- November 30, with rides available from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., seven days a week. This service is an effort to expand access to cost-effective transportation options within the KC region. Paratransit services will also be for individuals using wheelchairs and riders traveling with their bikes.
