You might think drive-in movies are obsolete since they're practically extinct these days, but you'll change your mind with a single visit to the Boulevard Drive In located in Merriam, KS. Clunky, static-filled speakers have been replaced by digital sound over your car's FM stereo, but you can still opt for the metal monsters if you want a vintage feel. You may even prefer the pole speakers if you've brought lawn chairs to enjoy the summer evening from outside your vehicle. The screen's up-to-date, too, with 4k resolution and digital projection.

Some things haven't changed much though. You still want to arrive early to stake out your spot. The box office opens at 7:00 p.m., but the films don't begin until slightly after 9:00 to give the trains time to stop rolling through with blaring horns. I've never heard the horns once the movies begin, although some traffic and train noise can still draw attention away from the screen once in a while.

While waiting, you can send the kids to play at the playground beneath the screen or pick up some very affordable snacks at the concession stand. Unlike theaters, you won't feel gouged by prices! And I've got to tell you, the popcorn here is some of the best ever! I only recently learned that the Boulevard Drive-In also has weekend swap meets and that space can be rented for special events, too, complete with stage, lighting, and sound system.

It's $10 per person (kids under 11 are free) to catch a flick at the Boulevard. But don't plan to use a debit or credit card here. Remember I said that some things haven't changed? The Boulevard Drive-In may have updated the movie experience since they opened 71 years ago, but they still only accept cash.
  • Merriam KS continues to be in a strong seller's market. The *extreme* lack of inventory is borderline incomprehensible. As of writing, February 13th, 2020, Merriam has a mere three homes for sale which are not already under contract. Three!! You could literally see every single home for sale in the city on a long lunch break. Current asking prices range from $42K to $250K with a median of about $184K.

In the last 90 days, 24 homes have closed escrow to change ownership. Closing sale prices ranged from $155K to $352K. Median closing price was right at $215K.

In general terms a market is considered balanced when the supply of homes equals 5.5 to 6.5 months of inventory compared to demand or absorption rate. The lower the month's supply of homes is, the seller tends to see an advantage in price or terms. The higher the months supply of homes the more advantage there is to the buyer in terms of price or terms. Merriam, however, is so hot right now, and the inventory levels are so low, that the absorption rate is measured in days versus months.

With interest rates incredibly low, it it difficult to imagine a better time to put your home up for sale in Merriam KS.

Johnson County Parks and Recreation Department recently had a ribbon cutting for the newly redone kids' playground called Dodgetown at Antioch Park. This is a great area to bring your kids. Designed to resemble an old wild west town, Dodgetown features a schoolhouse, general store, and a train station. The playground also has colorful cows that people can sit on.

Antioch Park is the oldest park in the JCPRD system and is still wonderful. Two lakes, rose garden, and walking paths make this a great place for a stroll. Also a good place for photo sessions.

Last year the city council of the City of Merriam approved a five-year public art plan. The first installation and ribbon-cutting ceremony was today, July 6, 2016, of a limestone tower with a large wind chime, entitled "Still Time." The artists are DRAW Architecture + Urban Design and the sound artist and composer is Paul Rudy. Despite the soaring temperatures, there was a good crowd at the Merriam Marketplace, near the corner of Johnson Drive and Merriam Drive. It was quite the event with the Evening Farmers' Market being open, food trucks, and music. Attendees were presented with a numbered, limited edition license plate to commemorate the event. Johnson Drive in Merriam is very picturesque, and "Still Time" is a wonderful addition to the area. We look forward to seeing the next four art installations.
