My husband and I were lucky enough to have last Friday off work and took that time to spend the early afternoon in downtown Parkville. We had a little lunch at the Craic and then headed down to Grigsby Field for the official presentation of $25,000 to the City of Parkville from Royals Charities and Price Chopper. These two groups will make it possible to get the fields up and running this spring and get the kids back in downtown. On one of our first visits to Parkville before we moved here, we visited downtown on a Saturday. That day, there was a summer league baseball game going on, and we were sold on Parkville! We are huge baseball fans, both of the Royals and our own kids. My husband has since coached both of my sons for years on the Parkville fields. We are so thrilled that they will be back in shape for spring training!

I ran on the English Landing Trail this morning for the first time in almost a year. It is so nice to have it available again for this old body. The trail was mostly in good condition, with some areas of un-level ground, so just pay attention. Thank you to the city and county for working so hard to get both downtown parks up and running again.

I love to bike the south side of the Line Creek Trail! My favorite "out and back" ride starts at the trail head at 68th Street. Heading south from there, the trail takes you through wooded areas, along a creek and into Riverside, MO. Once you get to the Riverside portion of the trail you will start to see the city's fabulous new art installation focused on the monarch butterfly and its migration patterns through the area.

There are many beautiful metal sculptures, stained glass displays and some colorful art installations from Park Hill School art students. You can see all of the art by staying on the trail and making your way to the bridge leading to Argosy Casino. All along the bridge are colorful, stained glass displays that reflect onto the pavement. It really is beautiful. Once you reach the casino, the installation ends, but I really like to bike up onto the levy to the end and then turn around. It's about a 16 mile, round trip and well worth it!

The City of Parkville offers its residents so many conveniences! One of those is the free, fall yard waste drop off. Residents can drop off yard waste at 6305 NW River Park Drive Monday thru Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Yard waste does not need to be bagged, but the city reserves the right to limit the amount of waste being dropped off. Proof of Parkville residency is required for this free service, so have a sewer bill or driver's license handy.

This is one of my favorite places in Parkville to walk, run, take my dog for a walk, and just enjoy the outdoors. The Platte Landing Trail is now open after being repaired from the spring's floods. The leaves are changing and the river is flowing! Stop by one of the restaurants or shops in downtown after your exercise. Downtown Parkville is the main reason my family moved to Parkville from Brookside in 2005 and it never disappoints!

If you haven't been down to downtown Parkville lately, the flooding has continued to be throughout the entire park area! I drove down there yesterday to see standing water all throughout the park area, and the bridge to the fields and dog park to still be closed. Rain, rain, go away!

My husband and I went for a hike around the White Tail and Old Kate trails yesterday for the first time this spring. It has been so rainy that we haven't been able to get over there until now. The trails are in really good shape despite the rain. There is a little bit of mud and wash on the north side of the white tail trail, but it was fine. We just had to do a little more paying attention. The best part of the hike was the waterfall, which is flowing like crazy. It's so pretty and really relaxing to sit on one of the benches and take in nature.

It's dinner time. Your family is starving. You don't want to cook. Well....if you live in Parkville, you're in luck! There are so many options for eating out or take out! In this insight, I am going to focus just on the eating establishments available in downtown Parkville. Not only is our downtown picturesque and quaint, but the businesses are all locally owned and operated, for an added bonus. Starting at the top of Main Street, Cafe Des Amis is a fabulous french dining establishment that has been around for a long time. It sits above "Hairs to You" and offers a variety of options for all taste buds. Don't be put off by the french-ness. There is something for everyone and their dining room provides a good opportunity for your kids to practice their table manners. Just down the hill is a more casual Italian option: Frank's. While it has a small footprint, it puts out lots of crowd-pleasing Italian favorites that can be eaten in or carried out. Further down the hill from Frank's is the new River Park Eatery. This is a very kid-friendly space, with its large dining area, lots of TVs, and a welcoming bar and menu that covers the gamut of American cuisine. Lastly, on the east side of Main Street sits Stone Canyon Pizza. This is some of the best pizza in town. They also serve a large variety of sandwiches, soups and entrees. Next time you feel your stomach rumbling, give one of these restaurants a try!

My husband and I were introduced to Wines By Jennifer by one of our good friends and we instantly fell in love. Downtown Parkville is such a fun place to visit but after discovering Wines By Jennifer, we are up there every month. They have new tastings every month from wines from all around the world. The owners travel the world to bring back some of the best wines for you to taste and discover. They also have a wine club you can join that has many perks! Trust me, if you like wine, Wines By Jennifer will not disappoint.

Well....the weather for Small Business Saturday couldn't have been better (60 degrees and sunny) and the crowds in downtown Parkville were great! Main Street Parkville Association really does a fabulous job of planning and executing events that help improve our community as a whole.

Speaking of MSPA, this is the organization that puts on Christmas on the River every year. And what a great event it is! Along with a festive atmosphere, food options galore, and strolling carolers, the event is capped off with a 1,000-voice children's choir and fireworks finale! And it's all free to the public! Wow! So.....how does MSPA fund this event? In addition to many fabulous sponsors, MSPA also puts on its annual Gallery of Trees fundraiser.

This year's event is Thursday, December 6 from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at VIP event center in downtown Parkville. Your $50 ticket gets you admission, live and silent auctions, a cocktail reception and taste of Parkville. Raffles are also available for the many pre-decorated Christmas trees donated by local merchants and individuals. It's sure to be another fine event to add to your holiday outings and a great way to give back to this community we love so much!

One of the biggest selling features when my family chose Parkville to be our home 13 years ago was the bustling downtown with its "mom and pop" businesses. Right now, downtown Parkville is full of some great locally-owned shops offering all sorts of interesting products. This Saturday is "Small Business Saturday" nationwide. If you want to get a jump start on your Holiday shopping and pick up some really unique gifts, downtown Parkville won't disappoint. I have lived in Parkville for the past 12 years and have really enjoyed most of the development around and in our little town, particularly all of the gyms and yoga studios that are available. For me, having easy access to different exercise options is very important. I won't typically drive more than 10 minutes for this. I covered the outdoor options in a previous post. Here, I am going to list the options that are either within Parkville city limits or within 5 miles of downtown.

Yoga Studios: Om Prana, Platte County Community Center South offers yoga classes, KC Yoga Center (formerly Zona Yoga). and InBliss Yoga.

Gyms: Platte County Community Center South, Hitch Fit, Laz Fit, Orange Theory Fitness, and
    Cross Fit Northland.

Specialty: Purre Barre, Rise and Shine Pilates and Wellness, and 9 Rounds.

I'm sure I have missed some and this doesn't include all of the options that are more than five miles away! No getting bored with your workout with this kind of accessibility!

We have just a few short weeks left of the 2018 Parkville Farmer's Market season. The last day for the year will be Saturday, October 27th, 2018. Support local area farmers and shop for great fall produce like apples, pumpkins, gourds, baked goods and more! They also serve hot coffee and beverages in case the weather is cold.

Fall is the time when lots of folks want to get out for a nice drive to take in the changing leaves. Other folks look forward to the fall's bounty: the pumpkins, squash, and apples. Luckily, we live in an area within close proximity to all of this. Just outside of Parkville, west of Highway 435 on N Highway is Alldredge Orchards. They offer more than 20 varieties of apples that you can pick every weekend in September and October. There is also a pumpkin patch available this month. The kids will love the chickens and geese, as well as the play structures on site. The general store is open on the weekend and offers candy, apple butters, honey and bagged apples. If you're hungry, there is always a food truck available to fill your belly.
