When you need to renew your car's registration, a trip to Tonganoxie can save time for people from nearby communities. In my experience, it takes a fraction of the time to get license plates, get a driver's license, or register a vehicle compared to completing these tasks in Kansas City!

The Leavenworth County annex is located at 725 Laming Road in Tonganoxie, beneath the water tower and just north of State Ave (Hwy 24/40) and the post office.

Z&M Twisted Vines is a freshly sprouted vineyard and event site located halfway between Tonganoxie and Lawrence. It has a Lawrence address, which might make you think of Douglas County, but it's situated in Leavenworth County.

Unlike its namesake winery in the city of Leavenworth, which is akin to a wine tavern that sells take-home bottles, the new location is a vineyard that features events including family-friendly features like bounce houses, food trucks, live music, and recently, a hot air balloon event featuring pilots from nearby Bonner Springs and the Kansas City metro.

Both the vineyard and the winery are certified as "Homegrown by Heroes," meaning that the Kansas Farmer Veteran Coalition certifies that veterans own and operate at least 50% of the business and that more than 50% of ingredients were produced by veterans as well."

This vineyard lives up to its name by offering unusual varieties that might surprise your taste buds. On-site, you'll find twenty hand-crafted varieties of specialty wines - and you won't find these varieties in typical liquor stores! I noticed a watermelon wine and a jalapeno wine on the menu, for example, though the one I purchased was a cherry wine. I probably would have bought some pineapple or choco-raspberry wine, too, but both had already sold out by the time I got there.

If you visit, keep an eye out for our RE/MAX hot air balloon. RE/MAX pilot Joel joined members of the Huff and Puff hot air balloon club for a "glow" in May, where families can visit pilots, learn about ballooning, and get up close and personal with something you just don't see every day! Kids loved it and got to take home trading cards of the balloons they saw.

The Leavenworth State Fishing Lake is a draw for nearby residents who want to spend a couple of hours in the evening or take their smaller boats out on the water - alone or with family. There usually isn't a whole lot of competition on the water, and anglers say they nearly always catch something in this 160-acre stocked lake. It's not necessary to have a boat, of course. Piers and shoreline are readily available, too.

The Bobcat Bass Fishing Club, comprised of local students and sponsored by local businesses, recently renovated the bathrooms and docks, as well as doing some shoreline pollution patrol. The lake's looking better than ever this year, and with warmer weather that's setting in now, it's the ideal time to get acquainted!

Tonganoxie is a quaint town with a mostly rural feel. Area folks tend to know each other well and are always willing to lend a hand. Located almost exactly halfway between Lawrence and Kansas City, it is the perfect place for someone who doesn't mind a thirty-minute drive to work because they know it means avoiding constant city distractions, noise, and intrusive rules and regulations.

My husband and I have family members who live in Lawrence, Basehor, and Tongie. We enjoy meeting up at Gambino's for pizza night. It keeps us all in touch with each other. For birthday celebrations, we often rent the VFW building and have a potluck and gift exchange, then let the kiddies run off their energy at the park next to the parking lot.

Then there's Myers Bar. One-of-a-kind creative cocktails and live music are just the beginning. Wait until you hear how it came to exist. It's a story that will restore your faith in humanity! Many Kansas City and Lawrence professionals make the drive out to spend a few hours on weekends. It has been said that gathering at Myers feels like hanging out at a friend's house, and I'm inclined to agree.

If you're interested in a small-town community feel where you know your neighbors, Tonganoxie is one to consider.
  • Having lived in this community for over 30 years I can say that it probably comes as close to "Mayberry" as possible. Small town living where your neighbors care about you and your family. Centered around a tight knit community with excellent schools, eclectic shopping and a quaint downtown area. All the amenities of a large town without all the hustle and bustle. Nestled conveniently between Kansas City and Lawrence. Whether you need a cutting edge hospital or an education, this bedroom community can help foster your needs.
