Grab your tent and your s'mores fixings and head out to the lake! Spring means camping, fishing and s'mores. Pomona Lake is a great place to fish all day and then huddle around the camp fire at night!

This lake is large and offers all sorts of activities and fishing. There is even a ski club that is based out of the Pomona Lake area.

American flags, the smell of grilling food, and the sounds of laughter filled the campsites at Pomona State Park. The sounds of boats on the water, folks with smiles and relaxation on their faces, this is a great spot to spend this long holiday weekend.

Pomona State Park offers fishing, boating, playgrounds and numerous other activities for families to enjoy. Located within an hour of Kansas City, Ottawa, Topeka, Emporia and many other towns, this lake is a great location to enjoy the sites and sounds of nature. Even if you do not have a camper or a boat, there are plenty of other things that you and your family can enjoy. Nature trails are also popular in the area. What a great place to explore and to take in some relaxation!
  • My great grandparents used to own a farmstead where the Pomona Lake Reservoir is now located. My father was born there in the house. Now when we drive across the dam with our kids, we point and tell them "that's where grandpa was born". My great grandmother used to scribble notes on anything she could find. The price of eggs would be scribbled on the wall next to her telephone, and peoples phone numbers scribbled on the lining inside her purse. I found a note scribbled inside her Bible that indicated the state offered to purchase their land for 85 cents per acre back around 1963, if I remember correctly.

Growing up, we had a camper and a speed boat and would spend one week at the lake each summer. I guess my father still felt a connection with the land and the lake. I can remember as a teenager thinking, what in the world am I going to do for an entire week with no phone, no TV, no friends. But always, by the end of the week, I never wanted to leave.

Pomona Lake turned 50 years old in 2014. My husband and I stayed in the Tonkawa Cabin a few months ago and really enjoyed the peace and quiet of the lake. We counted six shooting stars the first night as we were star gazing from our cabin deck. We still enjoy just driving around the lake, exploring, fishing and watching the fireworks there each 4th of July.
