  • When staying in Springfield, having grown up there, I like to put on my running shoes and run through the city to see all of the changes that have taken place. Yesterday, my run took me through the MSU Campus, Park Central Square, and finally to Commercial Street, or "C-Street" as they apparently call it now. While C-Street is not the commercial street of my youth, with clothing stores, Cranks Drug Store, and Fire Station Number 2 (one of the fire stations where my father worked), today's C-Street looks as if it is once again becoming a vital business district with restaurants, one-of-a-kind shops and businesses, and even a microbrewery. I always think it is important to appreciate the past, but at the same time, to look to the future to realize the potential of what things might become and it looks as if C-Street is becoming an impressive part of town. Best wishes to all of the merchants there!

  • Nestled in southeast Springfield in the Galloway area along Lone Pine is a 12-acre public park. Sequiota Park is a very popular outdoor family attraction with playgrounds, walking trails, caves and a lake. Additionally, it is a connector bike route to Lake Springfield and the Nature Center. But perhaps the most interesting feature of the park is its past.

Once used as gathering grounds by the Kickapoo Prairie Indians, Sequiota's attraction is largely due to its caves and springs. There are three caves, the largest of which was originally used by Kickapoo Indians. Its entrance is about eight feet high, opening to 60 feet wide by 25 feet high; there is a waterfall in the cave. In order to protect its endangered species, this cave is closed to the public. The middle cave is a walking cave, while the other is a crawling cave. It's possible that these two caves meet somewhere beyond the blockage between.

In the 1880s, the park grounds were enhanced with evergreens and vines, ponds for fish and boat riding, as well as picnic grounds. Harry Truman held political events here when he was a U.S. Senator. The park area has also been a State fish hatchery, and in 1949, smallmouth bass were introduced to the park's lake.

Today, Sequiota Park is a popular spot to enjoy a walk, bike via the Ozark Greenways trail, have a picnic, feed the ducks and fish, or attend various arts and crafts events.
  • Children of all ability levels enjoy the unique, universal playground and ball field at Dan Kinney Park in southeast Springfield. Play areas are cushioned to avoid injuries for all children, and the Bobby & Betty Allison Miracle League Ball Field is available for those with physical limitations. The park also has a large pavilion and a 7/10-mile paved recreation trail. The park is adjacent to the Dan Kinney Family Center.
  • What could be better than an ice cream treat? In Springfield, we think it's Andy's Frozen Custard - a very rich, creamy dessert like ice cream, only much, much better!
Typically, frozen custard is a northern treat, but Springfieldians love Andy's so much we have a fistful of locations. You can spot them easily with their big cone on the roof.
From cones to sundaes with fresh, seasonal toppings, Andy's is a cool treat. Dig in!

Hiding regally in central Springfield is an historic castle. With secrets to keep after more than a century of activity, Pythian Castle still welcomes visitors.

Originally a retirement home for widows and children of members of The Knights of Pythias fraternal organization, the stone structure near Evangel College has also been an orphanage, a military service club, and is now privately owned.

Tours are available that share the history and the "ghost" stories, plus the castle is available for event rentals.
