Topeka's Designer Showhouse is an annual fundraiser benefiting Child Care Aware of Eastern Kansas. The Bare Bones preview is an opportunity to walk through the home prior to the many contractors and designers that will magically transform the home before the big reveal later in the year. This year's selected home is beautifully sited on the shores of Lake Sherwood at 6400 SW Suffolk Rd. Lake Sherwood is a residential neighborhood developed around a 225 acre man-made lake in SW Topeka. This neighborhood annually plays host to one of the city's largest private 4th of July celebrations. This year's Designer Showhouse provides one of the best lakefront vantages from which to watch the fireworks.

Topeka was nicknamed the Golden City by early settlers to the area, taken by the beauty of the sunlit rolling hills and autumn elms. The city crest was designed in the 1960’s by city-county planning department artist, Ed Bruske, at the request of Commander L.R. Olsen, for his USS Topeka guided missile cruiser. This ship was the second of three USS Topeka’s named for our city. The third USS Topeka was commissioned in 1989 as a nuclear attack submarine, and is still on active service. The Topeka flag was adopted in 1977; it was a United States bicentennial project of Boy Scout Troop 43 and designed by Dana Villeme, a 13-year old Eagle Scout, with the advice of some local architects.

Huff 'n Puff has been a Topeka tradition since 1975 and is held at Lake Shawnee. Currently, this event hosts approximately 30 hot air balloons each September and is a three day weekend event. The balloons try to fly Friday and Saturday, both morning and evening. On these nights they also do a glow at dusk. Then the balloons fly again on Sunday morning.

The event has a county fair touch to it. There are many food and beverage vendors, music and just a great time. Do make sure to arrive early, as on a Saturday night my wife and I were in the RE/MAX balloon and we could see how long the line was to get to the event! Also, Lake Shawnee is not only a great place for Huff 'n Puff, but also water sports, baseball, and more including places for weddings.

Today, September 19th, was a beautiful day for this great event. The Paws in the Park event, which took place from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, promotes animal advocacy in our community and there's always such a great turnout. The day begins with a one mile Mutt Strut and includes vendors, pet contests, activities for the kids, and a silent auction. Each year, Topeka's HHHS provides sanctuary for a staggering 8,000 animals a year. Mark your calendar for next year, come on out, show your support and enjoy the day in beautiful Gage Park!

The Herschel-Spillman carousel was in poor condition when it was purchased from Boyles Joyland in 1986. With public and private funding, the animals were painstakingly repaired, one at a time, and repainted in their original color by Will Morton of Denver. The renovation was completed and the carousel opened to the public in 1989. It is indeed a beautiful sight and fun to ride! This carousel is one of only 200 of its kind remaining intact today.

You may know that Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow’s two-year robbery and homicide spree ended in northern Louisiana on May 23, 1934, when law enforcement officers fired a hail of bullets into their car, killing 23 year old Bonnie and 25 year old Clyde. But did you know…that Bonnie & Clyde had stolen the 1934 Ford V-8 sedan from Jesse and Ruth Warren’s driveway at 2107 SE Gabler in Topeka on April 29, 1934?

They drove the car from Topeka to Louisiana, where they met up with Henry Methvin, a friend they had earlier helped escape from prison. Methvin betrayed Bonnie & Clyde, and his father helped arranged the ambush that killed them.
When the Warren’s got the car back, it had more than 160 bullet holes in it. The car has been sold several times over the years, and as best I can tell, is still with the Terrible’s Casino chain.

There's never been a more relaxing way to end the day than an outdoor summer concert at the Gage Park Amphitheatre. Big band music and a picnic supper under the stars combine to create a perfect antidote to a hurried life. Enjoy the Kaw Valley Cornet Band on August 2nd and August 19th is an open air concert by the Topeka Blues Society. Plenty of bench seating is available, pets and children are always welcome and the event is free to the public.

Fiesta Mexicana is in its 82nd year in Topeka and is always well worth traveling to the Capital City if you've never experienced this annual event. Benefiting Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, this year, fiesta time was family time from July 14-18th. In addition to the traditional carnival rides and games, there were pepper-eating contests, an art show, coronation celebrations, the Fiesta parade, and even a 5K run. Hope to see you there next year!
