Butler Area Insight

  • Located 15 minutes southwest of Butler on the intersection of Tinoa Road and County Road 1002, you'll find a discreet trail circling a small patch of land. In 1862, the area played home to one of the most important battles of the Civil War. The Battle of Island Mound is not only known by historians as a fierce fight between Kansas Yankees and Missouri Confederates, the battle marks the first example of African American soldiers engaging in combat during the Civil War. Despite being outnumbered the Union Army declared victory, making way for more African American involvement in the war. The site includes a small exhibit building and the 0.5-mile Courage Trail. Operated by Missouri State Parks, the Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site is a fabulous resource for learning more about Missouri's critical involvement in the Civil War.
