Old West Lawrence is a historic neighborhood bordered by 6th and 9th Streets on the north and south, the 600 block of Missouri Street and the 700 and 800 blocks of Arkansas Street on the west, and the east border being the alley east of Kentucky Street.
The oldest houses were built in 1860 and 1861. Five of these survived Quantrill's Raid of 1863. Many of the homes were built in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Most have a distinguishable style with brightly colored details, Victorian and Gothic styles, asymmetrical porches, and gingerbread trim. Old West Lawrence is a primary site in this town. Whether you are visiting or have lived here for years, it is definitely worth taking a walk or drive through the neighborhood.
