Truman Lake, officially known as Harry S. Truman Reservoir, is a large man-made lake in Missouri. It’s a major outdoor recreation and flood-control reservoir formed by damming the Osage River, and one of the state’s most significant water resources and recreational playgrounds.

    Where It Is Located:
Truman Lake stretches between Clinton and Warsaw, extending south to Osceola. The lakeshore lies across parts of Benton, Henry, Hickory, and St. Clair counties in west-central Missouri.

    Size and Purpose:
    - Surface area is about 55,600 acres at normal pool (up to ~200,000 acres in flood stage)
    - Shoreline is over 958 miles
    - Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
    - The reservoir’s primary purpose is flood control, helping protect downstream areas along the Osage, Missouri, and Mississippi rivers. It also generates hydroelectric power, supports wildlife, and provides vast recreational opportunities.

    Recreation and Wildlife:
Truman Lake is well known for outdoor fun, including:
    - Fishing: Excellent for crappie, largemouth bass, bluegill, catfish, white bass, and more — it’s regarded as one of Missouri’s top fishing destinations.
    - Boating & Watersports: Large surface area and many public boat ramps make it ideal for boating, jet skiing, water skiing, and kayaking.
    - Camping & Hiking: Several campgrounds and trails surround the lake, including in Harry S Truman State Park, which offers hiking, swimming, picnicking, and more.
    - Wildlife Viewing: Bald eagles, waterfowl, deer, and other wildlife are common sights, especially in cooler months.

    Nearby Amenities:
In addition to natural attractions, there are marinas with boat rentals and supplies, cabins, beaches, and local towns like Warsaw, Clinton, and Osceola offering services, lodging, and dining around the lake.

    History and Visitor Center:
Construction of Truman Lake began in 1964 and was completed in 1979. Originally authorized as the Kaysinger Bluff Dam and Reservoir, it was renamed in 1970 by Congress to honor President Harry S. Truman of Missouri. The Harry S. Truman Regional Visitor Center near Warsaw offers exhibits about the lake’s history, natural environment, and dam operations — plus scenic views of the reservoir and surrounding landscape.

In short, Truman Lake is a huge, versatile reservoir combining functional flood control with abundant opportunities for fishing, boating, camping, hiking, and enjoying Missouri’s outdoors.

Warsaw is a great place for fishermen and women who enjoy snagging Paddlefish. It's an annual event for those who love the sport. I live on the 77mm of the Lake of the Ozarks and see many boats out on the water with people snagging the fish. You can view a video by clicking the YouTube link below.

Warsaw offers many places to stay while you are here fishing. There are several hotels, and also bed and breakfast places to stay. You can search and find these locations online. While you enjoy your fishing, you'll also want to take a break and grab a bite to eat somewhere.
