'Ladies of the Lake' is a group of lake women that meet once a month for fellowship and fun. While the event is usually hosted at a resident's home, occasionally it is hosted by the Women's Club of Lake Tapawingo. Last month we met on the lake in kayaks and cruised through the coves. The main goal is to meet your neighbors and have a fun filled evening. Lake living is the "best"!

Ninty years ago a group of Kansas City businessmen formed the Lake Tapawingo Development Company. The men built a lake and sold construction lots for folks to build cabins for weekend getaways. They were very careful with their planning and put rules in place to keep it from becoming a typical subdivision. Early homes were two bedroom cabins that have since been enlarged for year round living. This careful planning is why Lake Tap is still a special place to call home!

The 90th anniversary celebration in July was a day of fun and community! Festivities began with the Tapawingo Yacht Club hosting a sail in the morning. Other activities included a home-built raft race, talent and costume contest for dogs, water balloon toss, yard games, chalk art contest at Liberty Gardens, BBQ dinner at Shelter house, DJ and trivia dance contest and much more!!

Lake Tapawingo is always a great place to relax, have fun, fish and enjoy what this community has to offer.

Do you love "Lake Life", but don't want to drive to the Ozarks to take advantage of the lifestyle that lake living offers? Well, pack up your flip flops, hitch up your boat, and buy a home at Lake Tapawingo! Conveniently located on the Southeast side of the Kansas City Metro Area and within about 30 minutes of all that Kansas City has to offer, this lake community offers plenty of activities to keep residents busy, but doesn't stray from its small town feel.

Lake Tapawingo was originally established in 1926 by The Lake Tapawingo Development Company. The community officially became a city in 1962 to avoid annexation by both the cities of Blue Springs to the east and Independence to the north.

The developers set out a master plan of the 315 wooded acres that makes up Lake Tapawingo. There is an 88 acre lake, with about 5 ½ miles of shoreline. The purpose of developing the community was to provide a country club with an "exclusive sports retreat, and rest haven" for the residents that call Tapawingo home. Since its inception in 1926, the community has grown to approximately 375 homes with a population of around 800 residents.

The unique thing about this community is that many of the homes still remain in the families of the early residents. Generation after generation of familiy returns to Lake Tapawingo to visit, live and raise their family where they came as children. Now, 90 years later, this community continues to thrive!
  • In 1926, a group of Kansas City businessmen were able to make Lake Tapawingo an official community. They did this by creating the Lake Tapawingo Development Company which enabled them to sign and register the papers needed for that historic task. It is said that the name of this community has Native American origin meaning either "beautiful water" or "beautiful place".The goal was to create a retreat type community where residents could enjoy sports and more in its 315 beautiful, rolling, wooded acreage.

Lake Tapawingo continues to grow and develop in many ways in order to maintain a high quality of life. The community is situated around an 87.8 acre lake that provides 5.6 miles of shoreline. Although the first house was built in 1926, this town has grown to include approximately 375 homes and about 850 residents. As always, residents really enjoy the variety of recreational opportunities, which include swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing, kayaking, paddle boarding and ice skating.

There are activities and clubs that residents can get involved with and meet their neighbors. There is a Women's Club and Sportsmen's Club that have been around for years as well as a couple of unofficial clubs such as Ladies of the Lake and The Old-timers Ski Club. There is always something going on at the lake and it makes for a fun lifestyle!
  • We tend to really enjoy summer first and foremost at Lake Tapawingo! Boat rides, swimming, tubing and BBQ's are fun! Night time on the lake is so beautiful also! There is nothing like watching the moon reflect off the lovely calm water to ease away the worries of the day.

Many of the homes were built 70+ years ago when many homes were summer homes and cabins. Through the years, many homes were remodeled and enlarged to accommodate families that decided they wanted to live there year round. The price of homes vary from low $100K to over $400K.
