Named after T.L. Norton, a favorite roadmaster on the railroad building crew, historians say that he used to park his railroad car on the hill at a siding and the term 'Norton's Place' become popular among the workers, thus creating the name of Nortonville. As the railroad began to work its way through, the first settler was named John Taggart and he arrived in May 1873. With a small stock of goods and an intent to open a store, John Taggart built and opened the first building, functioned as the first postmaster and railroad depot agent, and watched the town prosper, not as a growing town, but as a growing farm community. Interesting history for a small town in the middle of Northeast Kansas.

It is summertime now, but the holiday season is a special time in Nortonville. This is a quaint community a mere 20 miles northeast of Topeka. Plan to support local holiday shopping at their annual Holiday Open House, an extraordinary craft show held every year at the elementary school.

This craft show is one of my personal favorites, from the smells of fresh baked cinnamon rolls wafting through the air, to the delectable tables of gourmet fudge. With the annual visit from Santa so the kids can share their secret wishes, to the silent auction items and never-ending selection of exquisite crafts, this Holiday Open House marks the beginning of the holiday season for this lovely community. In a few short weeks the town will be beautifully ablaze with an array of Christmas lights. Plan to come share the mesmerizing holiday concert at the high school, or enjoy the beautiful caroling done by the elementary students at the senior center. Nortonville is a relaxing community we would all enjoying calling home. So come on out for a visit this holiday season and enjoy all that Nortonville has to offer.
