Christmas break has come and gone for our students in the Ottawa School District. As I dropped my children off at school this morning, some children looked as though they were ready to get back to school while others did not look too enthused.

As the cold weather has set in for the next couple of months, we can look forward to the months after, when the sun will shine again. Ottawa is a great place to raise our children and to make great memories with them. Thank you to all of the teachers in the USD 290 district.

Exciting news for Ottawa United School District 290. A new elementary school is under construction and set to open in the fall of 2017. Nearly 40 percent of students from Lincoln, Garfield and Eugene Field elementary schools chose the name of the Ottawa School District's newest school building. The students were thrilled to be involved in naming the school. The name they chose was Sunflower Elementary School.

The school district for Ottawa is USD 290. The district comprises 3 elementary schools (Garfield, Lincoln and Eugene Field) with 1 middle school (OMS) and 1 high school (OHS). There were 1,778 students enrolled in the elementary and middle school for the 2014-2015 school year. The USD 290 office is located at 1404 S Ash. The superintendent is Dr. Jeanne Stroh.

A new elementary school has broken ground for the growing needs of the community with construction toward the end of 2016 at which time Ottawa High School will also be expanded as well as a number of other projects including safety and security - see the link for more information. The superintendent schedules to have the currently approved bond issue work finalized by October of 2018. This is a school district with great leadership and community support doing great things for the students of Ottawa, Kansas.
