  • Hiding underground northeast of Ozark, is a wonderful natural monument of the Civil War, Smallin Cave. The large cave was discovered in 1818. Sitting in a lush valley, it has a huge natural opening. Inside, a cave guide points out features, fossils and the cave's living dwellers (such as salamanders, crayfish, and bats).

The cave has had many uses through the years, including home to Osage Indians, as a Civil War headquarters for Union troops, as a summer retreat for campers, and as picnic/social grounds. Today, the property is privately owned, and guided historical tours are available daily. It is a wonderful spot that brings our past to the present!
