Over the past few weeks, Riss Lake residents have been noticing an increase in the number of American Bald Eagles. One day it was reported that there were 16 Bald Eagles seen in a single day! The majority of the eagle sightings have been on the west side of Riss in the coves. Fox 4 News recently posted a video to their Facebook page where they interviewed one of the Platte County conservation agents about these majestic birds. Visit their page to view the video footage from right here in Riss Lake! They truly are beautiful birds and it's exciting that Riss Lake can watch these amazing creatures in action!

In late October every year, the Riss Lake Fishing Club stocks around 1000 pounds of farm raised Rainbow Trout. These silver beauties provide a unique opportunity for anglers of all ages and are a favorite at the dinner table. Trout thrive in colder water temperatures and are relatively easy to catch right through the end of June. It is encouraged for anglers to harvest their catch and enjoy them as a healthy meal. The best eating fish are in the one-three pound category and are simple to prepare. It's a wonderful perk of living in the Riss Lake community!

One of the most popular communities in Kansas City North is Riss Lake! Riss Lake is located off I-29 and 45 Highway. Beautiful homes vary from the low $300's to over $2 Million. One of the biggest attractions to this community is the lake itself. The lake is approximately 134 acres and is stocked with a nice variety of fish. Living at Riss Lake brings the best of both worlds. You can enjoy an upper bracket home and access your boat at the dock and be fishing within minutes!

Riss Lake is an absolutely beautiful neighborhood in Parkville; a vibrant small town nestled along the Missouri River in Platte County. Riss Lake has been my home since 1993, and I have truly enjoyed the amenities that are available to the residents. But the one amenity that I have enjoyed the most over the years (and the one that is used daily - rain or shine or snow - by dozens and dozens of residents!) is the network of sidewalks that meander through the tree-lined streets! It is nearly impossible to drive along Riss Lake Drive without seeing your neighbors out walking, jogging, pushing strollers, walking dogs, and visiting with friends along the way. You can even leave the paved sidewalks for a more peaceful, secluded walk along the Riss Lake Nature Trail. If you're a casual walker or an avid jogger, Riss Lake is the place for you!

Mark your calendars for Parkville's 30th annual Turkey Trail Trot 5k on Thanksgiving morning. I have participated in this run a few times, and it never fails to be a large, festive event. Hundreds of other "trotters" will be in attendance to keep you on the move! The 5k run starts at 9:00 a.m. and the two mile walk begins at 9:15 a.m. This annual event is a great way to start out a high calorie day with family and friends. Proceeds from the event benefit English Landing Park, the Parkville Nature Sanctuary and Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter: all very worthy recipients. Early registration is available online until November 21. Late registration and packet pick up will be November 22 at the Olde Mille from 4:00-7:00 p.m. and race morning starting at 7:00 a.m.

Not every neighborhood offers the chance for an afternoon outing to watch their lake get stocked with trout, but Riss Lake did! What a truly enjoyable experience it was to watch about 1,200 trout - big and small - slip down the plastic slide from the truck to their new home in Riss Lake! Many residents - young and old - were on the shoreline to not only watch, but to "wet their lines" in hopes of catching the first new trout!

I moved into Riss Lake in February 1993, and while I'm not a fisherman, I do enjoy the beauty of the lake each day as I drive over the dam. There's something so serene, so calm, about that view on my way home from work. If you and your family enjoy fishing or boating, then you should check out homes in Riss Lake, then go catch some fish!

English Landing Park is one of my favorite places to exercise close to home. I am a middle-aged runner with old knees, so I really appreciate that the park has a dirt path that goes easy on my joints. The trail covers a decent distance without having to retrace my steps, about 4.2 miles. This distance is achieved by running the outer loop in English Landing Park and then crossing over to the adjacent Platte Landing Park. I love that much of the trail goes right next to the river, which provides a great view. There are always walkers, bikers, runners, kids, families, and dogs enjoying what the park has to offer.

If you aren't necessarily looking for a place to get some exercise, the park hosts all sorts of festivals and concerts throughout the year. There is a playground for young kids right in the middle, with tons of shade. Sand volleyball courts can be reserved, as well as picnic shelters. For dog owners, there is a large dog park on the Platte Landing Park side, with separation based on dog size.

December 20th is the last day the Holiday Express will be at Union Station. It is a great family activity, where you can see Santa, write letters to Santa, and go through the Holiday Express. I took my family there yesterday, it really got everyone in the Christmas spirit, and the best part was there were no lines! Try it out!

I don't just recommend the area; I live in this wonderful neighborhood. It is a fantastic family community, surrounded by woods. It has three swimming pools, one which is Olympic size, walking trail, private lake for fishing, and Park University is five minutes away. We are also next to downtown Parkville, which has the 1800's feel in the unique shops.
