Later, in the early 1940's, construction began on the 9,080 acre Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant which drew people from all over the U.S. to work there. The city's population quickly grew in 1943, and the town went from 400 residents to 1,000 residents! Today De Soto has a population of 5,687. The housing prices here are some of the most affordable in Johnson County, usually about 20% lower than the rest of the county.
