Are you a fan of history? If so, this place might call out to you. Fort Leavenworth is the oldest, continuously active military reservation west of the Mississippi. This place is home to the Buffalo Soldier monument and many others. Fort Leavenworth faces the Missouri River for beautiful views and is located along the Glacial Hills Scenic Byway. You will need a visitors pass to roam freely around.

One nice thing about restaurants near military bases is that you can find international cuisines served locally. Leavenworth has its share of international options, including Thai, Mexican, Chinese, and Italian. But here's a new one you won't find in too many other places: Jamaican.

Island Spice gives guests a chance to try dishes that are as unusual as they are delicious. Diners who prefer familiar favorites will like jerk pork or the beef patty appetizers, along with a beer or soft drink. Adventurous eaters might prefer to try the mannish soup, oxtail, or a soft drink prepared with hibiscus leaves.

On a recent trip, I sampled all of the above (my husband is kind enough to let me sample his selections!) The owner asked us beforehand how spicy we liked our food, and seasoned it perfectly for us. The soup was rich and savory, bursting with flavor, as was the oxtail selection. The jerk pork was reminiscent of BBQ beef tips. Both meals were accompanied by delicious red beans and rice side and a spiced serving of fresh cabbage. And the beef patty? Well worth the wait, since it takes about twenty minutes for this appetizer's flaky pastry crust to get baked and served hot.

Although operations have been limited since the pandemic's limitations, U.S. Army officer and Island Spice owner Dave Richards says he hopes to get back to live music on the weekends. Obviously, reggae is a top choice, but Dave says they have had enjoyed a variety of music genres and hope to do so again very soon.

Coming on post today, it occurred to me I am still humbled to associate with and walk among our nation's finest on a regular basis. As an active duty military spouse, coming to Fort Leavenworth was like coming home for us. We are Midwesterners, and it felt great to be back.

Fort Leavenworth is a historic and beautiful post. The campus has nice green spaces and is home to the United States Army Command and General Staff College. The college features four schools: the Command and General Staff School, the School of Advanced Military Studies, the School for Command Preparation, and the School of Advanced Leadership and Tactics. Students who attend the Command and General Staff College, or CGSC, at Fort Leavenworth are among our nation's best military leaders. Upon their graduation, they will join the ranks of many great notables of our history such as Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, and George S. Patton.

As I stood there watching Old Glory proudly flying at half-mast in honor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms, I hope they somehow knew their sacrifice was not in vain. Our country may be considered a mess by the masses. However, as I stand here on this post looking at the faces of these men and women who made a choice to be a part of something larger than themselves, who walk the walk and will hold the line when called upon, I am proud of them. I honor them, and I am thankful for them. They are our Heroes. Our Defenders. The American Soldier.

The Suburban Restaurant is a hidden gem on 20th Street. They have creative menu items, and a fun atmosphere which makes The Suburban Restaurant and outdoor patio my favorite place to eat in Leavenworth County. My favorite item on the menu is "the Donald burger". So good!! They don't open until 4:00 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, and are closed on Monday and Tuesday. They offer a brunch on Sunday and open at 10:00 a.m., on Sunday only.
  • Leavenworth boasts the "oldest City in Kansas". Gaining a military stronghold, both Leavenworth and Ft. Leavenworth offer a rich eclectic taste of old and new. Historic downtown is filled with small business as well as a good mix of culture to include the famous C. W Park Museum.
  • Leavenworth is the First City of Kansas, sitting on the banks of the mighty Missouri river. It's home to a large military presence as the renowned Command and General Staff College attracts many officers and their respective families. Great area to raise a family and enjoy the best hospitality the Midwest has to offer.

Leavenworth is the first city in Kansas. Here you will find spacious new homes and historic homes from the 1800's. Take a drive down South Broadway Street or Edplanade Street overlooking the Missouri River, and find yourself stepping back in time.

As I drove around Leavenworth today, I drove by the VA Hospital and I found myself taking a moment of silence to reflect on all the things I am grateful for in my life and how many of those things are made possible because of our veterans! Thank you to each and every veteran for selflessly serving our country!
