One nice thing about restaurants near military bases is that you can find international cuisines served locally. Leavenworth has its share of international options, including Thai, Mexican, Chinese, and Italian. But here's a new one you won't find in too many other places: Jamaican. Island Spice gives guests a chance to try dishes that are as unusual as they are delicious. Diners who prefer familiar favorites will like jerk pork or the beef patty appetizers, along with a beer or soft drink. Adventurous eaters might prefer to try the mannish soup, oxtail, or a soft drink prepared with hibiscus leaves. On a recent trip, I sampled all of the above (my husband is kind enough to let me sample his selections!) The owner asked us beforehand how spicy we liked our food, and seasoned it perfectly for us. The soup was rich and savory, bursting with flavor, as was the oxtail selection. The jerk pork was reminiscent of BBQ beef tips. Both meals were accompanied by delicious red beans and rice side and a spiced serving of fresh cabbage. And the beef patty? Well worth the wait, since it takes about twenty minutes for this appetizer's flaky pastry crust to get baked and served hot. Although operations have been limited since the pandemic's limitations, U.S. Army officer and Island Spice owner Dave Richards says he hopes to get back to live music on the weekends. Obviously, reggae is a top choice, but Dave says they have had enjoyed a variety of music genres and hope to do so again very soon. Stop in and let them know what types of acts you'd love to hear!
