Platte County R-3 School District is well into the construction of a new elementary school, and building additions, and re-structuring of existing facilities in response to a steady growth trend.Compass Elementary is a brand new facility at 401 Kentucky Avenue in Platte City. It will house up to 700 kindergarten through 5th graders when it opens this fall.Pathfinder Elementary at 1951 NW 87th Terrace in Kansas City is getting a 21,000 square foot addition which will accommodate more scholars with 14 classrooms, a multi-purpose room and more parking. Pathfinder will house kindergarten through 4th graders during the upcoming school year, but not enough land exists for the necessary expansion to handle fifth graders (at least at this time). However, Siegrist Elementary, located in Platte City at 1701 Branch Street will become a kindergarten through 5th grade school. The intent is to expand the number of grade levels in each elementary school from housing only one or two grades to the preferred kindergarten through 5th.These changes are intended to deal with over-crowding at some schools and an overall doubling of students district-wide from nearly 2,000 to about 4,000 during the past 20 years. And the future shows steady growth projections for the entire district. Also in the plan is a restructuring of the current 49,000 square foot Paxton Elementary School that will allow it to become part of Platte County High School. Predictions indicate that the number of seniors that will be graduating from the high school will grow to 350 in seven years from the 250 that graduated in the Spring of 2015.Platte County R-3 schools are growing and making the changes to accommodate that growth!
