At my lake house on Table Rock Lake, FM radio reception is limited, especially in the lower level of the house. So, rather than use a conventional radio, I use tablet PCs, to overcome this difficulty. I connect the tablet PCs to the house Wi-Fi for Internet access, then listen to radio by using the Internet browser on the tablet PC to navigate to the website of a radio station and click the "listen live" button. There are also apps, such as TuneIn and Slacker, that aggregate streaming radio broadcasts, where radio stations are categorized and search options help you find just what you are looking for. Note that you can listen to radio stations anywhere in the world that stream their content over the Internet. For example, I often listen to "Classic FM," one of my favorite radio stations, in London, England. You can also connect to music and entertainment media using services, such as Pandora and Amazon Music, or play music stored on the device, itself. I used tablet PCs for this, but any cell phone or table PC with Wi-Fi capability and Internet access can be used. Cellular service is not required when using Wi-Fi to connect to the Internet. So, this is a great way to re purpose your old cell phone or tablet PC. Note that if you are using an active cellular device, you will want to make sure that you are connected to Wi-Fi so that you will not be using your cellular data. For better sound or more volume, you can connect your tablet PC or phone to your home entertainment system using the headphone jack on the tablet PC or cellphone and the proper cable. For greater portability, you can also connect to a Bluetooth device.
