Hesston was established in 1886 as a village with the post office being in Elivon. The post office was renamed to Hesston on Dec. 16, 1887. Hesston was founded and named after the Hess brothers where the train depot on the Missouri Pacific Railroad was built. By 1912 Hesston had grown into an important shipping and receiving point for farmers throughout the region.Many of the early settlers were Mennonite farmers. In 1909, the Mennonite Church founded Hesston College in the town. In 1981, the Dyck Arboretum of the Plains was founded on 13 acres which today is a tourist destination for schools, visitors and wedding parties. It showcases more than 600 varieties of native vegetation, walking trails and a pond. Today, Hesston is home to approximately 3700 people. Hesston has good schools, parks, hiking/biking trails, businesses, churches and a wonderful community spirit.
