The popular historic Lafayette County Courthouse, located in Lexington, is a talking point among locals and visitors alike. Built in 1847, at a construction cost of just a little over $14,000, this majestic courthouse overlooks the Lexington Downtown area. This courthouse proudly displays her wounds received in 1861 during the Civil War, when a cannonball was lodged in one of the columns of the front of the Courthouse. This cannonball is still present in the structure of the Courthouse and can be seen still today. With the recent and unfortunate closing of Wentworth Military Academy and College, which has been in existence since 1880, many people are re-visiting the city's rich historic legacy. This is vividly shown all over the city in its homes, buildings, and businesses and neighborhoods.
