Sedalia's historic Katy Depot is located at 600 East Third Street. The MO-KS-TX Railroad began operating in Sedalia in 1873. The Katy Depot was built with limestone from a local quarry and finally opened in May of 1896. The Depot was used by the community for more than 60 years and the last train to leave the depot was in 1958. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources took over in 1987 and the Depot is still part of the Katy Trail State Park. The tracks were removed and converted into a walking and biking trail traveling across Sedalia and beyond utilized by locals and tourists alike. The Depot has been restored inside and out and is home to the Sedalia Welcome Center and Chamber of Commerce. Inside you will find exhibits that represent the influence the railroad has had on the Sedalia community. You'll be taken back to the past when you walk through the door and see the displays and hear the stories of how the Katy Depot came to be and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. You can take a piece of history with you in the unique gift shop that greets visitors to the Depot and offers souvenirs for sale. Take time to view the sculptures outside the Depot that are symbols of Sedalia's past, along with old pianos placed outside reminding us of the ragtime heritage Sedalia is also known for. Come visit our Katy Depot and enjoy the nostalgia of a time long past but not forgotten!
