In 1909, Reverend John Sauer, of Saint Peter's Evangelical Church in Kansas City, Missouri, gave the 12.5 acres where this neighborhood sits to the Evangelical Church of North America to be used as a retirement community for its clergy. Originally known as "Germantown" due to its German-speaking inhabitants, this neighborhood is home to 13 homes built between 1906 and 1938. After changing its name to Blue Springs Terrace, this community was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 for being the first retirement community developed by a protestant denomination in the United States.
