If you are new to our area you might not know that in 2003, on an early May afternoon, an EF5 (the most powerful) tornado touched down in Kansas City, Ks. It caused death and extensive damage. After this disaster, city officials made it mandatory that all new construction homes within the Unified Government be built with tornado safe rooms or have a basement with concrete walls. The city requires that the safe rooms be built to Federal Emergency Management Agency standards. Builders within the county have found that buyers really like this requirement and it has become a selling incentive.
