The City of Parkville is offering several events over the next weeks to facilitate your garbage and yard waste needs. This is a time of year when residents typically do a lot of yard work, getting ready for the colder weather. Residents can drop off their yard waste during the "Fall Cleanup" event on October 13. Drop off your small limbs, leaves and grass (no plastic bags) at 6105 NW River Park Drive between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Also accepted at this time are used batteries, scrap metal, water heaters and much more. Call 816-741-7676 for more details.

The Fall Curbside Pickup event takes place next Monday, October 15. Parkville residents can place landscape waste and bulky waste at the curb by 7:00 a.m. for pickup. Landscape waste must be bagged and limbs bundled to a maximum length of four feet.

In addition to these two events, residents can also drop off yard waste at no charge from October 15 - November 30 from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday at 6105 NW River Park Drive. Proof of residency is required.

One thing I love about living in Riss Lake is the proximity to so many different fitness options that don't involve a gym membership, most within one-three miles. The closest and easiest is, of course, Riss Lake itself. The lake is a great place to paddle board, kayak and canoe. If you are a runner or walker, just take a walk on the well-kept sidewalks. The hills in the neighborhood will give you a great workout!

If you want to get out of the neighborhood, venture the very short distance south on Highway 9 to the Parkville Nature Sanctuary where nature's bounty surrounds the walking and hiking trails. The White Tail Trail is my favorite. Continuing south on Highway 9 will take you to English Landing Park which affords 4+ miles of walking, jogging and biking trails right along the Missouri River. A little further southwest from downtown Parkville will take you to the beautiful trails of the Green Hills of Platte Wildlife Preserve where dogs are allowed. The trail head for the Missouri Riverfront Trail is just west of this and connects to the Line Creek Trail for a fabulous 16 mile loop. I don't know too many places with these options!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 15. Parkville is partnering with the city of Riverside to host a household hazardous waste and recycling event in Platte Landing Park from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The hazardous waste recycling will take place in the parking lot near the dog park. To get there, travel into downtown Parkville and go south on Main Street toward the river. Stay on Main Street all the way into the park, past the baseball fields and continue to the right. The dog park is at the end of the road. Some of the items accepted include paint, automotive products, antifreeze, and batteries.

I took my first Orange Theory Fitness (OTF) class yesterday at the gym located in Burlington Creek. What an excellent workout and another great addition to all the wonderful fitness options in the immediate area. The one-hour class is comprised of treadmill work (you can walk or run), weight lifting and rowing. If you love high intensity interval training, this is perfect for you! You get a huge calorie burn and full-body workout that will keep the calories burning all day long. The gym opens officially on August 17, but they are currently still offering introductory rates and free class trials. Check it out!

One of my favorite outdoor activites is stand up paddle boarding (SUP). If you are a resident of the Riss Lake subdivision, this is an activity that you can participate in right in your own neighborhood! I have been paddling on the lake for years and recently invested in an inflatable paddleboard for easier transport to and from the lake. I just drive right down to the marina, inflate my board and get out on the water. Paddling on Riss Lake is a great way to see the neighborhood from the water. There are many small coves easily accessible from a board. Wildlife is also plentiful. Just yesterday, I saw a young buck drinking from the lake. Turtles, herons, bald eagles and many varieties of fish are also in residence there. Just another outdoor activity that this great neighborhood has to offer.

I was so pleasantly surprised today at the Nature Sanctuary! For years, if one had to use a bathroom, the only thing available was a porta potty. That's not really anyone's first choice. Park University has always had a bathroom right next to the softball fields and the Sanctuary parking lot, but they were not always open and not technically "public" restrooms. Imagine my glee today when I had a runner's emergency and found that the softball field bathrooms had been switched over to public restrooms. Not only that, but the inside of the restrooms have been completely updated. Thank you Park University!!

La Bottega is an antiques/vintage store located in English Landing Center in downtown Parkville. If you are a fan of the First Fridays West Bottoms shopping experience, you would really enjoy this market. Right now, most of the booths are full of unique finds for your home. I came out of there yesterday with a vintage croquet set, old toolbox, metal plate holder and some other items for my farmhouse. I plan to go back this weekend for some larger pieces. They are open seven days a week, which is just as convenient as its location. To get to English Landing Center, just take your first right after crossing the railroad tracks. La Bottega is the last business on the left hand side. Go check it out!

I hadn't been in the Parkville Nature Sanctuary in awhile until this weekend. It has been so hot that exercising outside has been rough! But Saturday was a lovely day, so I decided to walk from my Riss Lake home to the Woodhaven pool and access the sanctuary from the trailhead behind the play structure. Did you know that was there? Yes, it is a very convenient access point for our neighborhood!! Once in the sanctuary, it was completely shaded and beautiful, as always. I ran the White Tail Trail loop, taking in the many perfect spider webs, abundance of greenery, and birds chirping. This helps to distract from the challenging nature of the trail with its switchbacks and hills. I'm looking forward to doing it again soon.

What a great service! We recently started this curbside recycling program, and it has taken away the hassle of hauling our glass to the nearest recycling location. We just put our bin out front once a month and it gets picked up for just $8 per month!! Wow! I also love that this business was started by a local fireman who really cares about the benefits of recycling glass. They offer group discounts if you can get some of your neighbors to sign up with you. Don't worry if your entire bin is filled with wine bottles...they don't judge!

Over the past few weeks, Riss Lake residents have been noticing an increase in the number of American Bald Eagles. One day it was reported that there were 16 Bald Eagles seen in a single day! The majority of the eagle sightings have been on the west side of Riss in the coves. In late October every year, the Riss Lake Fishing Club stocks around 1000 pounds of farm raised Rainbow Trout. These silver beauties provide a unique opportunity for anglers of all ages and are a favorite at the dinner table. Trout thrive in colder water temperatures and are relatively easy to catch right through the end of June. It is encouraged for anglers to harvest their catch and enjoy them as a healthy meal. The best eating fish are in the one-three pound category and are simple to prepare. It's a wonderful perk of living in the Riss Lake community!
