Due to its proximity to Kansas City, Independence has all of the amenities of a large metropolitan area while still maintaining a great hometown atmosphere. Although it still has a small-town feel, Independence is the fourth-largest city in the Missouri. Independence is also the county seat of Jackson County, although a small portion of the city also falls within Clay County.Like many cities in the Kansas City metro are, Independence is rich in historical significance. Independence was founded on March 29, 1827, and quickly became a vital frontier town. Known as the "Queen City of the Trails," Independence was an important stop on the California, Oregon and Santa Fe Trails. Independence is also the hometown of President Harry S. Truman and where he began his political career. There are several historical landmarks in Independence, including the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library, and the National Frontier Trails Center. There are also many modern day amenities and attractions including the Adventure Oasis Water Park, the new Independence Event Center, nearby Arrowhead Stadium, and over 21,000 acres of outdoor fun made possible by Jackson County Parks and Recreation. If you still have time on your hands with all of these amazing activities, spend some time shopping at either the brand-name stores at Independence Mall or at the myriad of local shops that line Independence Square.
Herford House is a gem nestled in Independence, boasting its Kansas City roots and a legendary reputation that stems from its original location in the Kansas City stockyards. As soon as you step inside, you're greeted with the inviting aroma of premium hand-cut steaks grilling over hardwood coals, setting the stage for an exceptional dining experience. The ambiance of the dining area is warm and inviting, with dim lighting, rich hardwood paneling, cozy private booths, and a grand fireplace that adds to the rich lodge-type atmosphere. It's the perfect for romantic dinner, or a group meal with friends. For starters, the Prime Rib Stew stands out as a classic favorite, featuring tender meat and fresh vegetables simmered to perfection. It's a comforting dish that sets the tone for the rest of the meal. The Autumn Harvest Salad is my favorite. The tartness of the apples contrasts beautifully with the nutty toasted butternut squash, while creamy goat cheese and a delightful vinaigrette dressing tie it all together. To end on a sweet note, the signature house-made carrot cake is an absolute must-try. With its decadent combination of walnuts, pineapple, coconut, and white chocolate cream cheese icing, every bite is a symphony of flavors. The addition of caramel sauce and candied English walnuts elevates this dessert to new heights of indulgence. Overall, Herford House offers a memorable dining experience that celebrates its Kansas City roots while delivering top-notch cuisine and warm hospitality. Whether you're craving a perfectly grilled steak or a delightful seasonal salad, this casual steakhouse delivers on all fronts, leaving you eager to return for more.
