First, a great read, "Gray Ghosts of the Confederacy" by Richard S. Brownlee, describes this historic event. Visit the Lone Jack Battlefield Museum and Soldier's Cemetery to unlock the mystery of why Kansas and Missouri have such a vivid state line border. From 1860 to 1865, these two states were fast and furious with guerrilla warfare during the American Civil War. Many Missouri families were driven from their homes as a result of Order No. 11 for aiding guerrilla fighters, as well as commerce destruction of telegraph lines, railways and robbing of mail coaches. Kansans and Missourians raided towns on both sides of the Kansas/Missouri border. These events made Missouri one of the deadliest states for war casualties during the Civil War. Many lost family, homes, property and fortunes over raiding that went on in both states.
