Versailles is located in Morgan County and was established as the county seat in 1854. The late 1800's saw Swiss and German families, many of whom were Mennonites, settle in this town. The Mennonite population continues to thrive today. Morgan County was named for the Revolutionary War General Daniel Morgan on January 5, 1833. The beautiful court house that is in the town square was constructed in 1889, and is currently still in use, Several buildings in the Versailles town square are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Morgan County consists of 594 square miles and today has an approximate population of 25,000 people.
