The Jacob L. Loose Park is well known as the site of the Battle of Westport. Following the Civil War, from 1896-1927 the park was used as a golf course. Ella Loose purchased the 75 acre park, as a memorial to her husband, Jacob, who was the founder of Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company. On the northwest corner of Loose Park sits a public garden designed by landscape architect, S.Herbert Hare. It was dedicated in 1936. While the garden originally included a lily pool, it quickly added a sculpture in 1939 called "Spirit of the Rose Garden". From 1980-2001, a fountain donated in memory of Florence L Nelson, was on display. The Kansas City Rose Society purchased the current $750,000 fountain with private donations, which was dedicated in 2002. Currently there are over 160 rose varieties represented by more than 4,000 rose plants. If you're looking for a beautiful place to get married, The Laura Conyers Smith Rose Garden at Loose Park serves as the venue for many weddings all year long. Kansas City is for lovers!
